Reading a French postcard: front and reverse

Start with the printed caption on the front: it can identify the street, building or viewpoint more precisely than a broad catalog category. A monument is a subject, not a city. Check both the caption and the location fields before adding a card to a town collection.

Separate the estimated date from the postmark

The catalog year is an estimate, not a verified printing date. A dated postmark records postal use; it does not establish when the photograph was taken or the card printed. An unposted card has no postal date to rely on. Compare the reverse, publisher imprint and image before narrowing its date.

A card to examine

Paris, Hôtel de Ville — lot YBT984 is catalogued as unposted, with publisher L.D. and an estimated year of 1905. Open its front and back scans to assess the printed caption, imprint and condition. Treat the date as an estimate rather than a postmark reading.

Before buying

Inspect corners, edges, creases, writing and postal marks in the scans. Use the lot number to match the postcard with the external Delcampe listing and check the seller's current availability, condition description and shipping terms there.
